Grand Scribe’s Notes for November, 2016

(To be read at your next meeting, and where possible, circulated to Companions)

Well, here we are with my first and last Grand Scribe’s Notes for 2016. We have less reasons for the Grand Scribe’s Notes these days as with our electronic media, most communications are handled on a direct basis and documents are exchanged promptly by email attachment.

It has certainly been a busy year with the triennial Grand Installation having been held in Brisbane a couple of weeks ago. Our newly Installed Most Excellent First Grand Principal, M. Ex. Comp. Kirby Leeke, has already commenced his first year as leader of our wonderful Order by attending the Installation of Yeppoon RAC No. 130, and with his new Deputy First Grand Principal, Right Excellent Companion Colin Mander and the new Grand Team are looking forward to 2017. The Most Excellent has certainly “thrown down the gauntlet” and challenged us all with his vision for the future of our Organisation. I suggest that you should all read the text of his Address to the Assembly at the Grand Installation which is included in the Minutes of that event which have already been forwarded to you. The Address is also featured on our web-site under Current Information – Recent Speeches. We face challenging times ahead but we certainly won’t be “rolling over and playing dead.” It certainly is a time to get excited and motivated.

I now wish to bring to your attention several items and I ask that, even though some of your Chapters may not be meeting again until early 2017, you ensure that your Companions are made fully aware of the contents of these Grand Scribe’s Notes, if possible by emailing them on to those of your members who have email.

1   Active Grand Chapter Office:         Applications are now being sought from Companions seeking Active Grand Chapter Office for the 2017/2018 year, which commences 4th November, 2017. Applications close on Wednesday, 1st March, 2017 and a letter giving full details and an Application Form will be forwarded to each Chapter Scribe Ezra today. Additional Application Forms will be available from the Grand Chapter Office. In this role you will be playing a very important part in the future of this Grand Chapter. In recent years, it has been very disappointing that the number of Nominations from Companions in South East Queensland has been very low and has been easily surpassed by Companions in Regional Queensland. Grand Chapter asks that all Excellent Companions who will have completed a term as First Principal of his Chapter as at 4th November, 2017, please give your serious consideration to applying for this important role in Grand Chapter. Grand Chapter urgently needs eligible Companions in the South East part of the State to nominate for Active Grand Chapter Office. You will get to travel to places you might never otherwise visit, and make lasting friendships with people you might never have otherwise met, and at the same time, you will form lasting relationships with the Companions that you will serve beside as a Grand Chapter Officer. Active Grand Chapter Office is not an onerous task and requires only a small part of your available time.                                                                                                                             Give it your very serious thought. It is a decision which, I can assure you, you will look back on as one of the best decisions you have made in your masonic career, and you will be making a significant contribution to your Grand Chapter.

2      Thornton Pollard Bursaries:            Applications are now being sought for these Bursaries for secondary students who will be undertaking tertiary studies at a recognized tertiary facility in 2017. Full details of the Terms and Conditions of these Bursaries are included on the reverse of the Application Form. Applicants can be the child, grandchild or ward of a financial member, or the child, grandchild or ward of a deceased member of a Chapter within the Jurisdiction of the Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Queensland who was financial at the time of his death. Please note that applications close on Monday, 30th January, 2017 at 4:00 PM, and late applications will not be considered.

A letter and accompanying Application Form was forwarded to each Chapter during the month of October. Additional Application Forms can be obtained from the Grand Chapter Office.

3   Chapter Membership List Updates and Directory Listing Updates:      These have already been sent to all Chapter Scribes Ezra and are due for completion and return to Tetty by next Monday, 21st November, 2016. I thank all Scribes Ezra for their assistance in completing these tasks on time as Tetty has some tight deadlines to meet and requires your information to meet those deadlines.

4   2017 Grand Chapter Dues:              The Budget for 2017 will be presented to Grand Committee for approval at its final meeting for 2016 which will be held next Monday, 21st November, 2016. Chapter closures and falling numbers continue to place a great deal of pressure on our income and even though our costs have, once again, been maintained at lower than budget estimates, there will be an increase of $5.00 in Grand Chapter dues for 2017. I confirm that Grand Chapter Dues for 2017 will be $93.00 per member and I also confirm that the $5.00 discount per member for early payment before 31st March, 2017 will still apply.

6   Prologues and Epilogues:     Feedback we have received from Candidates and Members since the release of the Prologues and Epilogues for all degrees has been extremely positive, and we again ask that all Chapters use this very important part of the education process for our Candidates. They have been advising us that they are finding both documents to be very enlightening and the Questions and Answers a great help in gaining an understanding of the relevant degrees.

7   Black and White Eton Jackets:        Eton Jackets continue to be a roaring success. Since starting to sell the White Jackets we have sold a total of 369. Black Jackets have now been included in the new Grand Lodge Dress Code and our sales of this item have been 127. I expect this to grow markedly as the Winter Dress time approaches next May. Although we only make a moderate profit from the sale of these items, that profit goes toward helping to defray our costs and thereby reduces the need for larger increases in Grand Chapter Dues. In this way, the sales of these items are helping you as a member of SGRACQ. Tell your Lodge and Chapter members about these Jackets. They are a quality item at a very reasonable price. Payment can be made by cash, direct deposit or credit card. We are also able to ship anywhere within Queensland for just $15.00 with Australia Post. We have made sales to people in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and have also sold them into Darwin and PNG. 8   Grand Chapter Office Closure:       The Grand Chapter Office will be closed for the Christmas/New Year break from Tuesday, 20th December, 2016 and will reopen again on Monday, 16th January, 2017. In addition, forward notice is given that the Grand Chapter Office will also close for the 2017 Easter Break at 3.30 pm on Friday, 7th April, 2017 and will reopen at 9.00 am on Tuesday, 18th April, 2017. As these are very quiet times for us in Grand Chapter, we are confident that these closures will have little or no impact on the operations of our Chapters. Should you have the need during the closure period, I can be contacted through my email address at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. on my mobile 0408 314 018.

Please do not hesitate to contact Tetty or myself in the Grand Chapter Office if there are any issues or queries which you require us to address. We will be only too happy to assist you.

We take this opportunity to wish each and every one of of our Members and their families a very Happy and Holy Christmas and a Prosperous and Fulfilling 2017.
